A word from Markus Popp/Oval on the belated release of OvalDNA player:

I'd like to apologize for the irresponsible delay in delivering this software, which comes out several weeks after the original release of the "OvalDNA" album, the format that OvalDNA player was originally meant to be bundled with.

Well, in a way, this is probably a familiar story to most of you: all contributors to this project are pretty busy people to begin with. Well, that and the somewhat unruly dynamics of software development never fully complies to even the most generous project schedule.

But we think we have come up with a way to compensate you for your waiting time and help you restore faith in this project: we will be releasing a total of 8 free (themed) Oval sound packs at - here we go again - semi-regular intervals to keep you busy building tracks and to keep things interesting.

Anyway, first and foremost, we are relieved that we can finally deliver OvalDNA player in a shape that lives up to our original vision for this application. Also, please do feel invited to be part of the little community around OvalDNA player. And even if the full and pretty ambitious feature set is not quite "there" right now - your feedback and ideas will help us shaping this software from day one... See you on !

Thank you for your support,

OvaDNA player release info

We are happy to announce the immediate availability of OvalDNA player, a unique, little indie sample browser for Mac OS X, Windows 7 and Windows XP. OvalDNA player is a FREE add-on to Oval's recent, 2-disc concept album "OvalDNA". It can be downloaded starting April 30th, 2012 from using the download code that customers got with their copy of "OvalDNA".

OvalDNA player represents a, well, playful approach to handling sound files including a few unique takes on the traditional sequencing paradigm. OvalDNA player is part colorful, casual sound browser, part sound-over-time music tool for AIFF and WAV samples (and yes, that also includes user sounds).

The release version ( "iteration 1") of OvalDNA player comes loaded with a set of 8x8 customized  Oval sounds ("OvalDNA Soundpack 1"). Users can also import their own sounds - or they may start with those 2000+ free (and neatly pre-sorted) Oval AIFF sound files included on the DVD-ROM of the physical, 2-disc retail release of the "OvalDNA" album.

OvalDNA player will be made open source in a future release - once its full feature set will have been specified. Nonetheless, users should feel invited to help shaping this software's future from day one!

Soundpacks & Updates

Oval will release more soundpacks of 8x8 (themed) sounds at semi-regular intervals. Each new soundpack is going to result in a new, incremental version of the OvalDNA player, a so-called "iteration". There will be a total of 8 iterations, each of them adding a new soundpack until OvalDNA player's internal sound browser is maxed out. Each iteration is going to include all other Oval soundpacks to that point, so iteration 8 is going to be a pretty big download.

For questions or suggestions, users are invited to check out a forum as well as a FAQ on, which will also feature a tutorial explaining the current feature set. Any email feedback you will leave there goes to Barry, the developer. And of course there's always the option to message Markus directly on his facebook: "Oval (Official)".
